Hantavirus - cruise ship

On 22 May 2026, the World Health Organization reported an Andes hantavirus case in a crew member of the MV Hondius cruise ship. The case had disembarked in Tenerife, was repatriated to the Netherlands and had been isolating since then. As of 22 May 2026, 12 reported cases and three deaths had been recorded as part of the outbreak. On 25 May 2026, the Ministry of Health in Spain reported a new confirmed hantavirus case in an individual remaining in quarantine in Spain. On 18 May 2026, the World Health Organization (WHO) stated that a total of 11 cases of Andes virus (nine confirmed and two probable), including three deaths have been reported in relation to the outbreak which began on the MV Hondius cruise ship. Previous reports from WHO state that confirmed cases are being treated and isolated in a number of countries (France, Netherlands, South Africa, Switzerland, and USA). As of 11 May 2026, one additional case of hantavirus has been reported in France in a former passenger of a cruise ship linked with an outbreak. A total of nine cases (six confirmed) including three deaths associated with a cruise ship have been reported by the World Health Organization (WHO). The type of virus in this outbreak has been confirmed as Andes hantavirus. The vessel departed Ushuaia, Argentina, on 1 April 2026 and followed a route across the South Atlantic. The WHO are working closely with national authorities of all affected countries to ensure appropriate public health measures are in place. Risk to the global population is low. As of 7 May 2026, a total of eight hantavirus cases (five confirmed) including three deaths associated with a cruise ship have been reported by the World Health Organization (WHO). The type of virus in this outbreak has been confirmed as Andes hantavirus. The vessel departed Ushuaia, Argentina, on 1 April 2026 and followed a route across the South Atlantic. Hantavirus - unknown origin

On 2 May 2026, a cluster of passengers with severe respiratory illness aboard a cruise ship was reported. The vessel departed Ushuaia, Argentina, on 1 April 2026 and followed an itinerary across the South Atlantic, with multiple stops including mainland Antarctica, South Georgia, Nightingale Island, Tristan da Cunha, Saint Helena, and Ascension Island. As of 4 May 2026, seven cases (two laboratory confirmed cases and five suspected cases) have been identified, including three deaths, one critically ill patient and three individuals reporting mild symptoms. The risk to the global population is low.
